That's the last one I parsed, devonian. Hint: chess notation is involved

I didn't see any chess notation! I took any to be the algebraic unknown, the middle letters to be person in reverse and the last letter the first of natural. The whole being a (strange or foreign) gas

In fact, there IS a chess notation there

algebraic notation in chess :

x signifies a capture of another piece : takes

Thanks all (probably jazzgirl and chrise) for help with that marshland plant. I had in fact heard of that herb or spice but had no idea what it did but I would never have got it if I had not read your posts. Now am stuck on 1A as some others are and I do not play chess! I think I had better learn as my grandson asked me to play it with him and I had to say I had no idea how to.
