@ Mamya. I used to go to Bolton School (Chorley New Road) and the Victoria Hall Methodist mission in Knowsley Street.
I'm assuming you will know both?

Hi elle
We used to have an intense rivalry with Bolton School (football, mainly, though rugby for me) and it was always a big match. Sadly, we rarely won!
(I taught at QEGS Blackburn)

They are also known as bamsticks in Scotland.
And we have a species known as "internet bampots" who wear that moniker as a badge of honour!

@Chris..by the time you were teaching at QEGS, I would have been long gone from Bolton! but what a small world!!!!
My cousin still lives in Blackburn and one of her daughters must be fairly near to you in the "disputed area"!
@ Mamya, incredible, your living just opposite the school! and your mum working there! I wonder would I have known her?
@ Rusty, bam 'sticks' sound as though they are long and thin? Barmcakes are round and doughy!

The area is so disputed that they have given up putting "Lancashire" signs just up the road from us (they were rapidly thrown over the fence) - the sign just says "Borough of Pendle" now.

She wasn't a teacher Elle, but a valued member of the domestic team that kept that huge pile clean and tidy - when she retired they presented her with a pottery image of herself made in the pottery class.

She treasured it.
