14d. Vain case for city or...i think it could be abortive, in that that is ablative using or instead of LA.
26d. Turns to lizards. ?s?s. Why could it be asks?

I doubt that is relevant.

I suspect it has to do with the origins of the word ASK for newt.

ask2 /ask/ (dialect)
