In my attempts it proved difficult to combine wordplay and a definition that also read well and these have been eclipsed by all of your entries, bravo.
Nice to see a contribution from imagcq again, I hope you're well.
A good range of devices on display and among the ones that really caught my eye were Les's  impressive middle letter collection, imagcq's subtractions from the V.C.and susan's last gasp initial letters.
However, I have it as a photo finish for first place with mattrom @ 8 being inched out by ixion's @ 7;

State penitentiary comparatively empty, room for one more?

My pogoing days have long since gone but I still smile at the stage-managed performance and I thought the sound was underrated. A bit like Marmite; you either loved them (for what they were designed to be by Mr McLaren) or hated the whole punk concept. Oh to be young and/or rebellious again!
