That's what jazzy was explaining, magworth - "fork" = "road junction"; "lift" = "free ride".

Sorry if you were confused by us trying to avoid giving the answer!

The dog can be known as just that, without the terrier bit

....though it does seem that the second word can be familiarly dropped (vrssm vrssm,as another dog might say)
