I did thank you Elle, in fact a few of you have provided other sites to refer to which has been really helpful. I have started to put new words and definitions into my notes on the iPad. Whilst I am not a great advocate of defacing books my dictionary's in Spain are full of written notes, but I think that's acceptable, don't you? They are after all a reference book! Although my pet hate is dog eared pages in reading books.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to write reference notes in a dictionary - it's a very good idea!
I've just ordered an up-to date (13th edition) Chambers dictionary, plus a Chambers Thesaurus. My reference books are a somewhat old edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary and a Collins Thesaurus. Every time I can't find an answer, someone very kindly comes up with a reference from Chambers , so I decided that was obviously the way to go... so have splashed out and ordered such from Amazon!

Way to go Elle. I have an old Oxford illustrated dictionary which is really useful, but really needs updating as the last Prime Minister is Margaret Thatcher! So very old but it does give a load of breakdowns on such obscure things as a grate and heraldic signs, coats of arms etc; will have a look at the Chambers as I agree most answers seem to come from that source from what I have learnt on this site.

I have cause for celebration, I have just picked up my first weeks old age pension!! Does not seem that long ago when I was picking up my first weeks wages.

Hitting the shops tomorrow in Birmingham City Centre. They have just opened a brand new library which I want to go and see and then a few cheeky wines with my daughter who loves reading but not Into crosswords.
