Earl falls in lierary death, feeling some apprehension (7)

It won't help you to know I am equally stuck but agree with the 'N' at what would be 1down. I have the hidden word in what I would call 2down from the first 'e' in 1across and my 3down starting on the top line, but the earl clue has stymied me somewhat. For anyone reading this, the grid has no numbers or bars.

I don't think it works if you have the first two across entries in the first row. Your 2 down comes through the T of the first across entry. I think. I too am pretty much stuck apart from that.

Thank you barista. I may give up on this. Have you actually solved the 'reinforce' clue?

Yes, an anagram of E (English) and corrected without the c (compliance).

It all falls into place eventually. A slog rather than a pleasure.

Some= any.

A bit late in the day, I have completed the crossword except the unclued entries. I would appreciate a hint with regard to the theme. Thanks.
