I have some alphabetical ones, Nelson. Have you any of the others?

11a,22a,24a - 8d,10d,13d.
Plus 3 of the alphabeticals - but don't know where they go, apart from the three letter one.

Difficult to get an inroad to this one. I have seven of the alphabeticals but only a few of the others. I reckon S,I,R and E are letters omitted in wordplay. Would welcome any thoughts.

Okay. The race-horse is I think a combination of a very famous race and a type of horse, giving a proper noun, abbreviations of similar proper nouns being seen in just under half of the alphabeticals. The most obvious example for me is the fourth alphabetical, which turns into the down 4 letter entry in the upper right.

I still have 26d to get and the 4 letter intersecting entry (which is the clue commencing 'Caught...')
I would have thought 8'd know the theme by now , but apart from having a near-complete grid, and having linked all the alphabeticals similar to the one I've described above, I am stumped.

I have found an online list of 23 of the English 'horses' , in the obvious online place. It is very hard to discuss this crossword without giving too much away. Anyway the list is incomplete but the last does do triple duty. It doesn't help me to see the theme in the slightest.

Is went possibly the answer to the clue starting "caught"?

I can see the logic of 'went'.

Thanks yes that must be right. So now I think I have a full grid but no theme!
