Duh. I meant McKim, Mead & White. I've had my coffee now.

The turned columns are hideous, but the overall effect is wonderful. White did the fireplace in the background.

Thanks, Aristo. As usual, my problem was with the forest vs the trees.

Parsed it as a Combination clue (trees):
? (joins up or gets) + A + B + IN + E(nglish)

instead of a Hidden clue (forest): joins up [hidden] = get(S A B IN E)nglish

Duh !

26A - putting the Reversal indicator between two possible defs is always a zinger.

I spend too much time in Wiki jumping from from one link to another, but there's so much esoteric stuff there.
