Wrongly punctuating is def. I N in 'notice I' in MING. The answer is 11 letters.

I've got the grid filled, with the gap-filing additions. On the highlighting, there are 14 cells which make up the gap-filling us the 'treated' overlong answers. But separately a relevant name is to the right of the grid (using diagonals etc). I assume I highlight the former as the relevant name is 5 cells and there's nothing else obvious to highlight. Anyone else got ideas?

I've got MISPOINTING for that and I assume it's one of the words that are too long. But that doesn't fit in with what I thought made the other three too long.

5d would appear to be UGANDA but I can't see how the word play supplies AND (or NDA).

And I have TONER for 27d. T = 140, plus ONE and R for "take" but I don't see where 100 plus 4 fits in. Is the ONE part of the theme?

TONER isn't thematic. It's got 2 sets of wordplay T and ONE and R (take) and TON plus 4d. Your 17d is correct. Once you get a couple of the overlongs you'll see what to do. 14a was the breakthrough for me.
