Harlequin, I wish you'd said that this crossword was Listener 4293 - it would have given an indication of the difficulty involved!

Yes. It is Listener alright. But the clue is unadulterated...there are no misprints etc. in it, so it is straightforward as cryptics go. Thanks Malone and Shooty for having a look anyway.

Thanks Malone. Chambers gives it as (dialect) 'to hoist', hence 'local', and eagle as a military standard, and as you say. t'eagle in Lancastrian, so the clue was accurate, but tough. very well done and thank you.
