Just not sure as for it to be grieve 53a (7) pondered,mused which I had thought for answer would need start with a t (if that makes sense)
Could answer be ardent ?

Ardent is an adjective and you need a verb.
I'm sorry if I'm not helping much but it's difficult not being able to see the crossword.

Thanks Ross I'm for your help ,I can't believe that I stuck to finish on one four lettered word ,it is hard when crossword not in front of you I try explain how I get the letters from answers around it probably be nonsense !

I tried that but if I do grip that makes 39d ?r?e?t so repent wouldn't fit aaaarghthink I am going to throw paper in the bin these two answers driving me and everyone who is helping nuts :-(
