I think 'usurps' can fit here
pretence can mean a false claim to a title. Therefore the reality of it happing would be 'usurps'

Often when someone is pouring you a drink they say, " Say when?", meaning, tell them when to stop pouring.

I was scratching my head with that one rusty. I saw 'when' but could not parse. Perfect answer from yourself. : )

I should add that when the poured drink has reached a satisfactory level, the recipient responds with, "When!"
