Could be a bird - "KNOT" = A sandpiper (Tringa canutus), found in the northern parts of all the continents, in summer. It is grayish or ashy above, with the rump and upper tail coverts white, barred with dusky. The lower parts are pale brown, with the flanks and under tail coverts white.

Never seen or heard of one though!

24 across: Independent fish from the poisonnier? (9)

Unhappy with the word poisonnier, I think it really should be poissonnier with the parsing: eel in france might come from a French fishmonger or am I missing something?
