Could it be Sanest? the home can be nest. sa is in visage. I hope I am wrong because that would be awful.

I have "intersect"
lay to rest= inter sect= school
cross = definition.

that leaves 16a) ?a?e?t

safest seems to fit what I think is the definition, but can't parse it.

looks like you are a q,lander..Busby..did you get( exact) for 9 across...can't see what ( on the nail) has got to do with it.
