Thank you mamya, I assume this is a tree, how you found it I do not understand although I now see where the letters come from.

mamya and Bernie, I located the answer as it is a substance obtained from a rubber tree, well done both. I am now going to bet on a few horses, I trust that their legs are not made from this stuff.

Ah, well I knew it as a child - ever tried dismantling an old golf ball?

Also when I worked in haberdashery we sold it in strips from a roll for stiffening in dressmaking.

Useful stuff.
