Bitter
describes a person who is angry and unhappy because they cannot forget bad things that happened in the past:

E.g. feel very bitter about my childhood and all that I went through.
She'd suffered terribly over the years but it hadn't made her bitter.

Thanks all - after my silly remark re. winter I think that this could be correct. Winter is now in and crossword complete.

Hi! Just logged in to check on 10A. I've put 'winter' - based on "Now is the winter of our discontent" Richard III, act 1, scene 1.
Any further thoughts, anyone?

Either way, it still feels like a different compiler, and personally I feel that Bitter is not a good solution for Causing Unhappiness.
Antagonised? That might lead to Bitter.
Causing Unhappiness might lead to Distress say....etc etc.

'bitter' is the wrong part of speech though; surely it should be 'bitterness' to be grammatically correct? I still think 'winter' is a better solution ( and this IS the correct form of speech!)
