Wouldn't have come up with 'pawnbroker'...am I right in that there's a connection to 'Oliver Twist' - did they call Fagin 'Uncle'?

I think there are many theories....here is another

UNCLE noun [mid 18th century and still in use] a pawnbroker, usually as ‘my uncle’ [Standard English ‘uncle’; thus the avuncular help he gives ‘relatives; in temporary financial distress]
