Thanks for help. Finally finished. Was thinking on right lines, but had wrong letter in 22a because had wrong type of "flower"

Morning All. No one else seems to have the same problems as I do ! 9 across - root? riot ? Can`t see any connection with king. 11 ac. I`ve got `in d ? t ?.

I parsed it differently as
Stepped = trod
A
some (vague amount)

I think your parsing is much better Jazzgirl.
Couldn't think how else to justify the answer I offered.
