Sorry to be a pain Marty but could you parse your clue at post 26 RE: Magwitch, i've never read Great Expectations and so not quite seeing the wordplay.

Also,
AB, what is the protocol with Theambler's post 40, is it in the voting or not as it's generated a comment about the time constraints

Oops. Didn't notice the time. I wish folks would use the 24 hour clock.

I'll recast my vote if that's OK.

Hi Les,
since BBM2 hasn't seen your post, if it helps I parse it as:
Definition : the last word
Way = "fashion" + Magwitch = Abel becoming "able" when uttered.

Was torn between Chris's non-compete clause @2 and Ixions clever 17 so have opted for Ixions anagram with the great surface reading at 17. Mutual back-scratching is entirely coincidental!

Hi Les and ginge et al just been celebrating a break of 18 ...
the way = fashion
magwitch uttered = ABLE Magwitch - Dickensian ne'er do well - more info here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abel_Magwitch

the last word = def.

I am chewing my way through "A Tale of Two Cities" at the moment and I seemed to remember Magwitch 's deathbed reconciliation in another of CD's masterpieces
