I seem to recall seeing this parsed as
S = Siemens + (c)ane

Seems right but what is the indication in the clue that only the first letter of Siemens is to be used. I'm a newbie and need to learn how to deconstruct clues.

I've seen SI used in quite a few crosswords, but not normally just the S

They aren't the same - SI is "Systeme Internationale" (or something like that) - the system for naming units etc.

I actually did know the "mho", the alternative name for the Siemens.
