Have a request in this puzzle. 18d. Italian learning drama taking in character at the end (7) L-R-N-O
I think it must be LORENZO. I get the Italian bit, with an L and an R, but I cannot explain the rest of the clue. Am I right?

Many thanks. The LORE bit expands my horizons. I think my previous knowledge of Japanese drama was limited to Shogun, Tenko and Monkey!

Hi jazzy,
Might not the parsing of pinko be
Biting attack from the right = pin (nip reversed) + ko = put out?
Not that it makes much difference.

You are always spot on ginge and your parsing sounds much better :)

Hi again jazzy,
if only it was true. You didn't appear as if you had convinced yourself and if you're anything like me I reckon it would have "gnawed away at you". Glad to help if I can.
