Hi you guys as everyone says nowadays.
Just one more thing!!!!
Now that the cheering has died down may I point out that the word to be clued was INCARCERATED.
This is a part of the verbal armoury in fact, the past participle of the verb To INCARCERATE.
If you were in Strangeways ( and legally banged up you would be Incarcerated indeed.
However Stir and Porridge do not stand for the same thing. they are nouns.
So although JWS included a definition , his cryptography was down the p....
( I presume the setter actually MEANT INCARCERA T E D!!! [#b]
Yours as ever

As I did not take part I refrained from commenting. However, IMHO Thea is right.

Hi Thea,
Although I think it is refreshing that you rarely shirk the issue do you not think that sometimes discretion in letting sleeping dogs lie is appropriate? You are spot on with your assessment of the "winning" clue but I'm sure some other participants, myself included, thought likewise but accepted the judge's decision without feeling the need to "belittle" the host/judge, the winner and those who congratulated jws with words praising the clue.

Thanks Ginge and Rossim for your posts which I accept as helpful. To Saki I respond- can any game or competition be informal fun where technical issues are ignored. But thanks to you too.
Closing down now
Yrs Thea

theamber, I read "stir" as a verb, not a noun, If I was stirring porridge in Strangeways, I would consider myself incarcerated. (I realise jws had strange ways as two words, poetic license?)
I thought the clue was a witty play on words with double definitions and a worthy winner of an informal competition.
