18d. is an old Scottish word for "ask", sounds like a pointed weapon; a spaeman sees into the future, so put that synonym round "p".

Out of interest, can anyone explain 11ac. "Ring to make H2 (4)"??????
I have an answer, but don't understand why that should be it - apart from the fact that it fits!!!!
