The second letter could be S or R
3D A sign of cold, perhaps (6) _ _ _ _ _ E. I think it is
SNEEZE
6D They control runners in winter sports (6)
S _ I _ R _

2d guy rope

3d could be freeze

6d skier

1d STOP-GAP?

1d. Stop- gap

P _ R _ _ _ for 10A, which answer is now obviously
PORTER.
But it all now throws out my guesses for 8A - It doesn't describe the present schoolboy (6) I had considered ABSENT or FORMER.

What letters have you got now for 8a

Apologies - I didn't give the letters I now have for THat last clue: 8A T _ U _ _ _ . The second last letter could be N (if SNEEZE is correct. But it would be R if FREEZE is correct.
