Imagcq, thank you for the link - as a good Catholic girl (well sometimes) I am aware of the divisions and schisms in the Church and Papacy to a point. I feel however that I am still missing something here.

If we take 'Personal relationship' to be 'Chemistry' then we are left with 'Petro' to complete the word play - ' between two successive popes'.


I realise I may be in danger of making heavy weather of this, sorry and thanks for all help.

Petro is literally translated to Rock from the greek i believe, as you say chemistry is personal relationship.

All popes are descended from peter?

I am really not shunning your response and very likely you are correct - but 'between' 'successive' and 'popes' (note lack of capital 'P').

Maybe a stiff drink is called for, ta once more.

It seems rather odd that this particular clue is proving so difficult to parse when the rest of the crossword was so straightforward . Grrrrrr.
