AndyC, according to my dictionary one def is "swiftly turning wheel". so it could weasily be whirred.

I suppose the noise I am thinking of is of something turning rapidly!

I'm convinced now.

Thanks all for your answers. Spotted on big Dave's blog.
Whirred (word) is the answer.
In my online dictionary 'whirred' is a synonym of rotated.

Cannot believe what a struggle this xword has been for me today. Doesn't normally give me this much grief.

Thanks to all : )

A late look in. I think harbinger has it.
whir = wür and word = würd (pronunciations in Chambers); so whirred would also be würd.

sorry Chrise, should have addressed reply to you. I read it wrong in dictionary. as you say it's really a noise. albeit the noise of swiftly spinning wheel, etc. but I still think it's right,

Also, from Chambers:-

vi (whirring; whirred) to turn or SPIN with a humming noise; to fly or move with such a sound.
