LOgic behind solutions to following clues :

3a Scientist was correspondent in a matter of law - answer is Archimedes - why ?
18d A character like Achilles will not start climbing on light material - answer aerogel - why ?
27a Place to eat stew - answer wets - why ?

chimed (was correspondent) in a res. res = matter in law

Hero (Achilles) will not start --> ero. On = leg as in cricket, So, A ero + leg reversed.

27 = mess, double def.
