I was stuck on this too as 55 across looks like 'sadder'. think it must be queen annes bead which is , I think, a type of lace

Many Years ago, before the 2nd World War, I believe, The Times published the interesting information "Queen Anne is dead" meaning it to be the anniversary of her death, not a piece of hot news.

However it was taken to be The Times being way behind the times and was greeted with much mockery at the time.
