I usually manage to finish most of the Saturday
cryptics, but now find that my local daily cryptic
has the edge on most of these! Last night, I battled
to within one of completion, the clue for which is:-
"Though no pointer, this dog will mark the spot".
It's 5 letters and I have -A-R- . Can't think of a breed,
so maybe an affectionate name?

CAIRN?

That seems fine to me, Rambler! Nowhere near on
that one.
