I suspect I have 10A wrong but can see no other answer than STALK (Second to speak comes in close for flowery bit). This provides the A in 11D and K in 12 D

All the other surrounding words I am totally confident about.

layette?

pole vault?

Trevor I can see that pole vault makes sense and can parse it, but can you explain the parsing for sepal and layette. I know what a layette is!
