Instead of 'irate', what about 'cross'?
(I don't have the paper, crossword, clue - but I just though it'd mean that 'ads' would work)

Looks like ADS to me, but the clue for 87 across is ANGRY with 5 letters. The R is the 1st letter for the answer to - Performs a past event again 2 6 which I have as REENACTS. I am ok - recently I have found the crossword to be a bit of a DAWDLE (SHOOTIE IN).

malone's "cross" looks OK then?

Malone - never thought of cross. Being cross is quite mild for angry. Ta much - I do not send it in anyway - just like to finish it.

Glad you've got it all done. Like you, I'd have said 'cross' was less angry than 'angry', but Chambers gives 'cross' as '...peevish;angry...'.
