I have only just seen your post from yesterday. I see what you mean about "like a chain" - the words are interlinked. Very clever!
I am familiar with the term from IT, where it is a common operation on "strings" (i.e. alphanumeric characters rather than numbers). Performing a concatenate operation on the strings HONK and GONG would produce the string HONKGONG. It looks like IT misuses the word!
