Is 47ac EFFERENT? If it is, I'm struggling to find a valid word for 49dn.

I have it as an abbreviation, and it seems to have worked.

Thanks, aristo. I've about 10 of the three-letter words left to do. Did you find these 9-letter clues harder than the main crossword too?

Oh yes. The last three took quite a while. I actually did have the right answer for one of those from the start, but there was a British reference I didn't get and I dismissed it as a possibility. As I posted in another thread, I might have set my own niners differently if I'd known that there wouldn't be the usual crossers- though that of course is what made it challenging.
