11a: strong drink brother consumes before food (6): *race*. "Bracer" it must be, but can anyone explain the wordplay? BR=brother, but what's the rest?

Brother CONSUMES suggests the word for food is between B and R

Which leaves RACE - an old meaning of which is Root of ginger - so perhaps - before food - means an obsolete word for food
