I think I have #1 now

Got everything but #2, Evil One. We're having a heat wave here- in the 90s F. You'd feel right at home.

I just knew #4 was one of your trademark clues - albeit hidden under the alternative spelling in Chambers :)

#4 I think I have the right 7 letters, but cannot find in any dictionary. Grrrrr....

1- W ALI AN
2- still don't have it
3- CRISP IN
4- DASHEKI (subtractive anag)
5- S ER VICE ABLE

1. I thought 'pallid' for this but couldn't parse it apart from getting A51 = ALI stuck in my head

2. ???

3. Crispin - charade of Invigorating (crisp) + fashionable (in). Def - cobbler (patron saint)

4. Dasheki - subtractive anagram - to play (anagram indicator) 'hide and seek' (fodder) minus (no) 'need'. Def - shirt worn in Africa and the US

5. ???

Jazzy - great minds think alike :) If you look under dashiki in Chambers, you will see the alternative spelling

Hi RE. I have only my grandmother's ancient Chambers and the 1972 edition and it does not seem to appear in either. Looking forward to hearing from Jolan on the rest.
