35D Grass on earth, (s)tale. (5)

"S" is a superfluous letter re prologue.

The answer appears to be REEDE from ?EEDE & the clue.
Last 4 letters are verified by crosses and Chambers Word Wizard proffers it, but it's not in my copy.
The spelling is REDE.

Any ideas?

Not oneey - but your letters are correct! This is the hyphenated word, referred to in the preamble.

The word's in Chambers, under 'one'.
(I thought you'd like the satisfaction of getting it yourself, but I'd be happy just to give it.)

Still none the wiser but will slog on - is it a Britishism I wouldn't be familiar with?
