Oops. That went into Never-land.

Slight glitch in the wordplay format for 49A:

GORGONZOLA, A
cheese (anagrind)
eschewed by (del)
defender of Dreyfus & Go = ZOLA + GO
L'Aurore - French political newspaper (def)
(where he published his defence)

Never having seen cheese used as an anagrind and having a gap in my general knowledge I stood no chance! A toughie indeed.

Thank you, Les and AB! Loved the puzzle. Les's 38a is perhaps my favorite all-round. Peterm's phrase "Bizet's refusal to entertain Chopin" at 26a is brilliant (the little brat- he was only a child when Fred died). AB impressive as usual with 37d. Lots of other inspired clues. And I was fooled by emrach!

I thought AB's 37d was a good clue too.
Originally I put firth (of Forth) which caused me a few problems with 42a.
