14 is not an anagram of 49

14 = 5 letter word meaning against (c----) + roman for 49

Incidentally I didn't get 31 until I found a site telling me that 'marine detachment' is sometimes used as a clue for 'island'.

I have been thinking like mad about question 14 and although I can get anagrams of 49, none of them mean against or have anything to do with 'up in the air'. Thanks calliewag for your suggestion but I cant make sense of that either especially as the roman numerals for 49 are XLIX !! Am I being particularly obtuse ??
38. The first listener turned around very quietly and last pluck was painful (7,5)
44. Special agent given a light airing post-war (4,6)
52. Safety pin joins first hair to the toupee in front of the fire. (6,3)
Sorry to be asking for more clues !! Many thanks.

Hi Polly Dee
14. The suggestion by Cleopatra above seems to make more sense than the anagram solution I had suggested. The Roman for 49 is IL (not what you thought)Before that a 5 letter word for against
38. Begins with T. a listener is an ear. PP is very quietly
44.Title name of radio programme way back in the late 40s early 50s
52. Begins with H (first letter of hair) Safety pin is pin on electrc plug. The 2nd word is slang word for toupee.
Hope this helps you, writing this makes me wonder how I ever got it in the first place !!!

Hi, the suggestions above for Q14 say that a 5 letter word beginning with C is needed before the Roman number 49 (IL), but it should be a 6 letter word.

Can anybody please help with clues for ...

89. Corvid entered into us, medic gave a small coin for treatment. (11,4)

93. Not all Spanish film extracts are ending up detracting from the star. (7,7)

Re question 14

My apologies - it should read 6 letters meaning against + roman numeral for 49.

I obviously can spell but not count.

Sorry for any confusion
