Sounds as if you've found the sub-theme of three(English)...the other five aren't English.

I slept on this problem. read inputs. not much wiser. got 28a, "NOTED" but noted what? names? poets? got 13 Nightingale. any hints???????

From your username I assume you are in Australia - are you familiar with UK bank notes?

3 answers here have all been depicted on the back of UK £10 notes - (what you could call, say, noted "tenners".) All were British.

The 5 answers could be called the same, say(!), and are not British.

yes. ex-scot in oz (59 yrs). haven't seen a tenner since the fifties. is "tenor" the 12d homophone?
