'Present near the Irish coast once, close to Bunbeg

present = offering

near the irish coast = off erin (ireland was once known as erin)

close to bunbeg = g (close [end] /last letter

play first fiddle (to dominate)

so to play first fiddle in an orchestra, would be to 'bow' [pronounced beau]in front of all.

to dominate would be to 'bow' [pronounced bow] to no-one

Thank you both. I was a long way from beau and erin.

Hi Toffer,

I don't think my explanation came across to well (re, beau)

It was my way of saying 'BOW' has two different phonic sounds when pronounced as different meanings.

1 to bow = to play the violin
2 to bow = to curtsy

hope this makes more sense.

Thanks, Shooter: it was a good way to distinguish between 'bow' and 'bow', not to mention 'bow'. Sometimes I really do feel sorry for foreigners trying to learn English.
