drvirgil, many thanks for your help, excellent crossword, why I didn't google those first 6 letters I will never know, not quite sure why an S is out of sequence may have another look later.

A pleasure, leon. There have been many, many occasions when I have needed a gentle nudge from people on this forum. I thought it was a great puzzle too...how these setters go about constructing puzzles like that, I'll never now. This week's Inquisitor in the Independent Magazine is also by Schadenfreude if you're tempted to go back for more!!
