City score without ball - TROY - 'Score' = TRY with 'Ball' = O Why does it say 'Without Ball' when it wants you to include it? (I thought it may be a misprint but I've seen this often in the past, where it says 'Without' X,Y or Z but actually wants you to make use of it)

Hi Brenden.
The 'I' is a tricky xword in it's own way as you are well aware.

I believe that the setter tries a reverse thought style posing sometimes.

Ie, you need to know the answer to 100% parse it.

Troy without ball = try (if you see what I am getting at.

This is my take on it, Not sure if it is correct.

Yes, it is a deliberate omission of punctuation.

City, score without ball
(Troy, score without ball) = try

the comma makes a big difference.

Like I say, 'IF' I am correct.

"Without" means "on the outside". (Chambers)
