Sorry for the late post, but only just opened the forum. STALACTITES must be right - the way I was taught to remember it is that the C means they hang from the Ceiling, while the G is STALAGMITES means they grow from the Ground. The clue I think is most likely to be ambiguous is 16a

Barnacle Bill is right - 16 Across is ambiguous - or is it?

For those of you without the paper, the clue is: A start showing how to make a star (3,3)

The down clues give the crossing letters ?E? O?F

It had been bugging me all day yesterday - let off, set off, get off, tee off, see off - what is the answer and why?

The answer came tome this morning when I looked at the clue again. To make "a start" into "a star" you take a TEE OFF. You also TEE OFFF in a round of golf.

Like all good clues, the answer is staring you in the face but is easy when the penny drops.
