I think this is 'visnomie' 'is no mug (initially)' in 'vie' (contest). Local character 'physiognomy', judging character from appearance

Thanks Harlequin.I eventually figured that one out but 22ac,25 ac, and 18 down still is unsolved.I think I might give up and try again tomorrow

25 ac is MANDAITES. I pinched it off the Answerbank. It's often worth looking there for solutions.

18d 4 letter word for humour in the middle
If you have most of the letters for 18d use Chambers word wizard
