19 D. Pirate coming aboard accounts for long-handled blades (9) b??????a?

(I'd originally thought of 'buccaneer', but couldn't see where 'blades' etc came in - the 'a' I have isn't definite.)

The preamble refers to a few answers being adapted before entry - it's unlikely that these two are involved.

Like you I thought 19d was not one of the affected clues and was convinced "pirate" was the definition of the whole answer. In fact, the pirate is Hook, within bills (="accounts") giving BILLHOOKS, which you will have to amend before entry.

Terrier, thanks - I got 19 D eventually. I found this week's crossword very...challenging!
