Beast (American) that doesn't go to sea.(4) o-u-. The answer would appear to be OXUS an old river, which did flow to the sea.The name has since been changed, so maybe the thinking is that it doesn't flow to the sea any more. Any opinions gratefully received.

I think you'll find it no longer flows into the Aral Lake but dries up in the desert (I'm translating from the German wikipedia article I happened to google).
Apart from that a smart puzzle, don't you think?
