"Writer and knight entertaining one" seems an incomplete clue.

Hi Mam
pen + sir + one is totally correct, as is the answer Pensioner(as far as I can see).
but there is no definition/synonym given in the clue.

for instance - if a clue just said - Mixed bread(5)
without a defining part to the clue the answer could be Bared or Debar etc
