One clue left.
11a. Go by boat around the top of Caithness and disperse in the Western Isles. (5)
S?A?L
The answer appears to be SCAIL i.e. sail plus C from Caithness, however my dictionary doesn't show this word. Any thoughts.?

Thank you mamya, chrisg and jazzgirl. I started trying Cryptics some five years back and went to a group to learn how. The guy running it suggested getting a Collins dictionary but I went for a Shorter OED. I regret this decision 'scail' is not in it and many other words besides in the past. Can you tell me which Collins you are using and I will treat myself to an early Xmas present. thanks again p.

Hi Plodder, I have an assortment of dictionaries but my current Bible is Chambers 11th edition (Big Red Book) - Scail is in there for example,

I think there is a newer edition out too.
