For 21 down: What to do when we omit a clue.

I was going to ask about the parsing of 1dn, but eventually I saw how it works. Without giving too much away, "a knight" is inside the word for deciding.

Not sure I've got the correct answer now!
I have a word meaning "having kittens" but how can AN be a knight? Being extra thick here.

N is used to designate a knight in chess (more recently, at least).

K was (and still is) King; Kt used to be used for Knight, but obviously N uses less ink.
